Updated on August 26, 2012

The bee-keeper

For the new bee-keeper

Being a bee-keeper, The rewards are without end I say this because I'm a backyard bee-keeper my self.I cant put in to words how much I enjoy bee-keeping, I love everything from starting a new hive to eating fresh honey and home made biscuits, hum" hum" good.In the summer when the bees are coming and going I like to go and just lay down by the hives and watch the little fellas working. Some times I will put a pease of grass on there front porch, the space in front of there hive, just to watch them scurry over and start cleaning it off.

Some food for thought

Some food for thought. Did you know the famous Sherlock homes was a bee-keeper in is latter days? Rev.L.L.Langstroth a great author on the art of bee-keeping invented the removable comb hive, the frames are made of wood, this is were the bees make there honey comb. The frames sit on a ledge on each side of the hive, leaving 3/8" to 1/2" space at each end and the bottom, this is the space for the bees to travel through out the hive.

The hive

The make up of the hive starting from the bottom up,are the hive stand, the bottom board, the brood chambers, you may use one or two of these, this is wear the bees raise there young and of course make honey, its the part you leave for the bees to live through out the winter.next is the queen excluder this stops the queen from passing through and laying eggs in the frames you harvest your honey in.Next are the bulk comb supers, these are the ones you rob honey from. You can stack these up as needed, depending on how big your hive of bees is.Here is some more food for thought the most honey found in one hive was in the guiness book of records as 404lb.Wow that would be a lot of biscuits wouldn't it.
